Stalwart’s of the American barbecue scene Bodean’s have a cracking free lunch for children, available every day of the week, though only in their Clapham branch. For each £10 spent, a child under 10 can eat a free meal from the kids’ menu. So it’s no surprise that the Barbican Kitchen is also top quality, with excellent pizza, salads, sandwiches and rotating hot food specials. Whether visiting for art, film, theatre or music, the Barbican is one of London’s most impressive cultural spaces. “Our aim is simple, to bring families together this summer to enjoy the amazing local, sustainable seafood on our doorstep,” says Tonks. Mitch Tonks’ beloved southwestern chain Rockfish, which specialises in fine cooking of sustainably caught fish, has free fish and chips for children under 11 when dining with an adult, although only at the Plymouth branch. Just try keeping them away from the Colin the Caterpillar and Percy Pig slushies. M&S is the pick of the bunch, with free meals every weekday, including tomato and cheese pasta and baked potato with sausage and beans. The weekly shop with children in tow can be a challenge, but thankfully most British supermarkets, including Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, offer free lunches for kids in their cafés. Since October last year, Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant group has offered free meals in many of its locations. On Sundays the group’s restaurants offer a free meal to children under 12 dining with an adult, and kids can tuck into homemade versions of classics, from chicken nuggets to fish goujons, as well as a brilliant roast beef. Gary Usher’s Elite Bistros, a restaurant group with spots across the Nort West, including Liverpool, Manchester and Chester, is one of the country’s best, with its elevated bistro classics drawing in customers from around the country. “With it being summer, and in particular a summer where a lot of people are feeling a pinch, we wanted to extend it to all the bistros to make spending that important family time together a bit more accessible for everyone.” It has long been present at their restaurant Pinion, in Prescot, but is now being introduced to the rest of their bistros, including Wreckfish in Liverpool, Sticky Walnut in Chester and Kala in Manchester.Īt Pinion, free kids meals “worked really well for the area, and it creates such a nice atmosphere, having groups of families with us,” says Elite Bistros marketing manager Gabrielle Kirby.
